WSTDA Updates Standards for Synthetic Web Slings and Round Slings

The Web Sling and Tie Down Association (WSTDA) has announced the latest revision to its widely-used standards for synthetic web slings and round slings, effective June 2026. The updated standards introduce several key changes that impact manufacturers, distributors, and end-users across the cargo control and rigging industries.

Key Changes in WSTDA-1 and WSTDA-2

The revised WSTDA-1 (Web Slings) standard now includes updated guidance on sling identification requirements, with new provisions for RFID-enabled labeling on heavy-duty slings. This change addresses the growing demand for digital tracking of lifting equipment in industrial settings, particularly in construction and offshore applications.

WSTDA-2 (Round Slings) has been updated to reflect new testing protocols for high-performance polyester and polyamide fibers. The updated testing methodology provides more accurate working load limit (WLL) calculations for round slings used in multi-leg configurations.

Impact on the Industry

For manufacturers, the updated standards mean adjustments to labeling systems and testing procedures. Most major sling manufacturers are already compliant with the new requirements, having received early access to the draft revisions through WSTDA membership.

Distributors and rental companies should expect a 12-month transition period during which both old and new labeling formats will be acceptable. However, all new production must comply with the updated standards effective from the publication date.

End-users benefit from improved safety margins and clearer identification, particularly the new requirement for color-coded capacity indicators that make it easier to verify sling ratings in the field.

What This Means for Buyers

When purchasing web slings or round slings, buyers should look for products labeled as “WSTDA-1 Rev. 2026” or “WSTDA-2 Rev. 2026” compliant. This ensures the product meets the latest safety and performance standards. Older inventory with previous revision markings remains safe to use within its rated capacity.
